Background of the study
Science education plays a pivotal role in preparing students for future careers in technology, engineering, and other science-related fields. However, secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State, face challenges in providing hands-on science laboratory experiences due to limited resources, equipment, and physical space (Muhammad & Zubairu, 2023). The lack of functional science laboratories impedes students’ ability to engage in practical experiments and deepen their understanding of scientific concepts.
Virtual science laboratories (VSLs) offer a promising solution by providing digital simulations of laboratory experiments that allow students to interact with virtual representations of real-world phenomena (Aminu & Ibrahim, 2023). This study aims to design and implement a virtual science laboratory system for secondary schools in Dutse, which will enable students to conduct experiments and explore scientific concepts without the limitations of physical resources.
Statement of the problem
Secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area face significant challenges in providing students with practical science learning experiences due to the lack of functional science laboratories. This study seeks to design and implement a virtual science laboratory to enhance science education and bridge the gap in practical learning opportunities.
Objectives of the study
To design a virtual science laboratory system for secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
To implement the system in selected secondary schools and assess its effectiveness in supporting science education.
To evaluate the impact of the virtual laboratory on student engagement and understanding of scientific concepts.
Research questions
How effective is the virtual science laboratory in enhancing students' understanding of scientific concepts and experiments?
What impact does the virtual science laboratory have on student engagement and interest in science subjects?
How do students and teachers perceive the usability and educational value of the virtual science laboratory?
Significance of the study
The study will contribute to the improvement of science education in secondary schools by providing a practical, resource-efficient solution to the lack of physical laboratories. The findings will support the wider adoption of virtual laboratories across schools in Nigeria, enhancing science learning opportunities for students.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on designing and implementing a virtual science laboratory for secondary schools in Dutse Local Government Area, Jigawa State. It will assess the system’s effectiveness in enhancing science education and will not extend to other educational levels or regions.
